Ohio homeschool requirements and record-keeping, 2026-27

Verified Last checked October 18, 2026

Since October 3, 2023, Ohio home education works by notice. Within five calendar days of starting (or of moving to a new district, or withdrawing from school), and then by August 30 each year, you send your district superintendent a short notice. It gives your name and address, your child's name, and an assurance that you will teach the required subjects. There is no hours requirement, no annual assessment and no evaluator under this section, and the superintendent must acknowledge your notice in writing within 14 days.

What you keep

How long to keep it. The sources we read set no retention period. Keeping a record for at least a few years is a sensible habit.

How Schoolkeeper helps

A twenty-second daily log, and then an export in the shape Ohio asks for:

  • An attendance record showing the days you taught.
  • Minutes by subject, totalled for the year.
  • A portfolio of work samples, photos and what they read, in date order.

Questions parents ask

What do I have to file to homeschool in Ohio?

Notice with the parent's name and address, the child's name, and an assurance of instruction in the required subjects, to Superintendent of the child's school district of residence. When: Within 5 calendar days of starting home education, moving into a new district, or withdrawing from a school; then annually by August 30.

How many hours or days does Ohio ask for?

Ohio does not set a minimum number of hours or days in what we found.

What trips people up when homeschooling in Ohio?

Earlier department rules (hours and an annual assessment) no longer apply; the 2023 section says it is not subject to department rules. The five-day clock starts when you begin, move districts, or withdraw, so send the first notice promptly.
